Do you have melasma that won't get better or that continues to worsen? You're certainly not alone in your frustration, but if you are looking for the best skincare products for melasma, you have come to the right place. As the only sunscreen that fades melasma, JACKET offers more than support. We offer a solution.
What causes melasma?
More than six million people in the U.S. alone are afflicted with this pigment-related condition that creates dark spots and patches on the skin, primarily the face, with nearly 200,000 new diagnoses made each year. The overwhelming majority (over 90%) of melasma sufferers are women.
The main causes of melasma are ultraviolet (UV) rays, Blue Light and hormones.
Both UVA and UVB rays from the sun contribute to melasma, although UVA bears the brunt of the blame. These long-wave rays penetrate deep into the skin and stimulate pigment-producing cells, causing hyperpigmentation and melasma.
While short-range UVB rays can play a role in the formation of melasma, they are more involved with worsening existing melasma spots, making them darker and more noticeable.
Blue Light, or visible light, comes from the sun but is also emitted from digital screens from devices such as phones, tablets, computers and televisions. Blue Light both causes and worsens melasma.
Hormones can also cause melasma. Elevated levels of estrogen and progesterone increase melanin production, which often results in hyperpigmentation issues and melasma. Exposure to UV rays or Blue Light during periods of these elevated hormonal levels significantly increases the likelihood of melasma development.
Pregnancy 'mask'
Hormonal changes associated with pregnancy are a leading cause of melasma. It is so common, in fact, that melasma is often referred to as a pregnancy mask.
Affecting up to 70% of expectant mothers, typically appearing in the second and third trimesters, pregnancy-related melasma often fades after childbirth. However, nearly one-third of these cases do not improve and become a long-term condition that tends to worsen during subsequent pregnancies. Less than 10% of those who experience pregnancy-related melasma will enjoy full eradication.
Can you get rid of melasma?
While there is no absolute cure for melasma, there are ways to prevent the condition from getting worse as well as treatments and skincare products that can improve and fade spots.
The most effective and important way to help prevent melasma from getting worse is to wear sunscreen every day, even on cloudy days. For best results, use a broad-spectrum (protects against both UVA and UVB rays) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and that contains Zinc Oxide. It's important to use a sunscreen that blocks Blue Light as well.
All sunscreens are not the same.
While there are sunscreens that meet that criteria and will help melasma from worsening, there is only one that is FDA approved to improve melasma. The dermatologist-developed JACKET SPF 50+ Anti-Aging Face Sunscreen patented formula contains medical-grade ingredients and select antioxidants that fade melasma and other signs of hyperpigmentation.
Created by longtime South Florida dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon Dr. Thomas Balshi, the JACKET SPF 50+ Anti-Aging Face Sunscreen is a weightless, hydrating cream that blocks 98% of UVA, UVB and Blue Light rays (nothing blocks 100%) and is enriched with antioxidants that work at the skin's cellular level to clean up DNA-altering free radicals that cause and contribute to melasma, among other signs of hyperpigmentation and premature aging.
Decades of expertise in the skincare and skin-health field, paired with a personal joy for the outdoors, conversations with patients and fellow medical professionals, and years of research, discussion and testing with cosmetic chemists enabled Dr. Balshi and the team at JACKET to identify a collection of antioxidants that combine to repair skin and improve melasma.
Best of all, JACKET is gentle enough for daily use and recommended for all skin types, tones and complexions, including individuals with sensitivities. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), among other organizations and medical experts, recommend including sunscreen in your daily skincare routine. Wearing the only one that will also fade melasma while also hydrating, healing and protecting against new damage is a no-brainer.
JACKET is not greasy or oily and doesn't leave a white cast, making it easy to conceal, including under makeup.
How does JACKET fade melasma?
Many sunscreens claim to be anti-aging, and most of those do probably offer some type of benefit that can be classified as such. JACKET makes that claim as well, and backs it up with antioxidants that reduce fine lines and wrinkles, boost collagen production, and fade hyperpigmentation, which includes melasma.
This is an important distinction because just about all broad-spectrum sunscreens that also block blue light will help "control" hyperpigmentation and melasma because those ultraviolet rays will absolutely darken existing blotches and spots. So, blocking a high percentage of those rays and limiting exposure will essentially manage the condition.
Yes, JACKET does that, too. So how does JACKET do what no other sunscreen on the market does — fade melasma?
Again, it's all in the ingredients.
The JACKET SPF 50+ Anti-Aging Face lotion is a patented formula, developed by a dermatologist, with eight anti-aging antioxidants including five that specifically target and improve melasma spots and hyperpigmentation. When combined, these antioxidants penetrate deep into the skin to minimize and reverse pigment-related damage caused by free radicals and environmental stressors, and slow the production of melanin.
JACKET contains antioxidants that improve melasma.
There are five antioxidants in the JACKET Face Sunscreen that are specifically deigned to fade and improve melasma and hyperpigmentation, although there are additional antioxidants in the formula that support these efforts while reverhing other signs of premature aging.
The antioxidants in JACKET aimed at fading melasma are:
Alpha-Arbutin
This natural herbal antioxidant is derived from the bearberry plant and blocks the production of melanin, helping to brighten skin tone, even complexions and fade melasma. It also helps improve acne scarring.
Green Tea Extract
The catechins found in Green Tea interfere with melanin production and lighten melasma spots and hyperpigmentation. Also a powerful anti-inflammatory, Green Tea reduces redness and irritation that can trigger or worsen melasma.
Pomegranate Extract
This powerful antioxidant attacks melasma in a variety of ways. Pomegranate Extract bolsters the skin's natural barrier, allowing it to effectively repair damage caused by UV rays. It also slows melanin production and boosts collagen production, resulting in a healthier and brighter complexion. Pomegranate Extract also helps dispose of damaged skin cells and replacing them with healthy ones.
Vitamin C
An antioxidant that slows melanin production, preventing new hyperpigmentation from forming and fading existing melasma. Vitamin C also neutralizes free radicals that formed as a result of exposure to ultraviolet radiation or other environmental stressors, leading to a brighter and more even skin tone.
Vitamin E
Incredibly effective at fading melasma, Vitamin E cleans up free radicals caused by UV rays, slows melanin production, reduces inflammation and encourages skin-cell regeneration, all of which help heal damage and reverse the severity of melasma and hyperpigmentation. As powerful an antioxidant as Vitamin E is on its own, it is even more potent when combined with Vitamin C, as it is in JACKET.
